THE BELL TOLLS: It’s been 194 years since the Chumash rebellion of 1824, when Chumash overthrew Mexican military and Spanish missionaries at missions Santa Ines, Santa Barbara, and La Purisima (pictured). The Chumash held Purisima for weeks before musket and cannon fire rained down on the sanctuary on March 16, ending the revolution with death and bloodshed.
